Thinking of relocating?

There is a lot to do when you decide to move to a new home, even if it is only a few miles away! Start to plan a few months in advance so that you don’t have as much to do when you get down to a few days form the actual move. Important things to consider:

  1. If moving outside your current city, contact schools, doctors, and other places that have records for you and your family.

  2. Get a change of address kit for your mail and magazines. Also don't forget current employers and the IRS ( www.irs.gov ) so that you will get your tax information in a timely manner. Banks and credit cards may take several weeks to change your address fully in their system, so make sure to give plenty of notice.

  3. Give things away! Moving is a great time to take inventory on your belongings. Have a yard sale for your valuables and consider a local charity for gently worn clothes and housewares. Plus, many charitable donations are tax deductible!

  4. Where will you stay when you get there? If you are moving far away, make sure that you have a place to stay close by in the event that your new home isn't ready. Contact friends, relatives or a local hotel well in advance so that they have enough notice of your arrival.

  5. Research rentals and movers. Plan in advance how you plan to get there and who will be on hand to help you. If you are driving a long distance in your personal car, get it serviced a few weeks prior so that everything is in working order.

  6. Eat that stuff in your freezer! If it's perishable, you should try to use up as much as possible before any move.

  7. Have cash for the unexpected. It's always a good idea to have enough cash to pay for the movers or a car repair should you not have access to checks or credit cards.
